About us

31.jpgThe brief rundown on our little family: Jeff is a musician turned computer programmer turned boat builder who watches way too many movies during the non-boat building months of the year. Heather is a world class raw food chef, but sadly only her friends and family are aware of this fact. When she’s not slaving near a rarely used stove, growing sunnies, or preparing green smoothies for us, she also spends much of her waking hours homeschooling Ethan, our 6year old bundle of joy questions. Ethan is probably the tallest 6 year old you’ll ever meet and if he didn’t have to take breaks to breathe, eat, and drink green smoothies, he could talk non-stop from morning until night.

Zambonidriver.com has taken a not so brief hiatus after being struck by lightning last summer. It’s taking a slightly new more blog-like form, but hopefully, it will bring you more information about the 3 ilses from minneapolis you than you ever wanted to know.

The header image above is from a family trip to the BWCA in 2006.

Salvaged from the old site:

As you may have noticed, this site has little to do with Zamboni® driving. One day, Bryan Ilse’s recumbent caught up with Heather’s bicycle along the River Road on their way home from work. As the evening commute is conducive to philosophical dialogue, Bryan and Heather got to talking about their childhood dream careers. Heather revealed that she had always wanted to be a Zamboni® driver (or a hot air balloon pilot). (Since her brother Brandon played hockey, she spent a good chunk of her childhood winters hanging out at rinks.) Later, when we were mulling over what the domain of our web site should be, Bryan convinced Jeff to register Zambonidriver.com. Oddly enough, the very same night we registered the name, Brandon was badly injured in a recreational hockey accident. He has since recovered quite well, but Heather still feels bad about the possible cosmic influence.

I met you at the MREA Energy Fair Back 40 campground and your website URL stuck in my brain. Best of luck on your adventures–it sounds like you have a solid plan. We’re looking forward to our next long-term travel opportunity and sailing may be the mode of transport. I’ll be tracking your feeds as they come.

Greetings from Tasmania, Australia. Have my Romany plans and getting ready to build. Decided on a round hull. Strip plank or Vertical foam? Latter seems simple, stronger, and, of course, more expensive. Really interested in your experience. Notice design has 9mm ply for hulls, but you used 12mm foam. Reasons? Richard W reckons you had a few difficulties, and I am wondering what they may have been. Love the pics! You estimated 40+ sheets. About right? You wanna sell the form designs? (lazy me!)
Congrats on your progress – don’t know how you do it all!! Julian
